Swansea star Tammy Abraham reveals how Harry Kane can get him to the World Cup

SWANSEA striker Tammy Abraham is determined to earn a place in England’s World Cup squad after taking inspiration from Harry Kane’s labours on loan.

The 20-year-old, on loan from Chelsea, ended a three-month goal drought with a brace in the 8-1 thrashing of Notts County on Tuesday night.

England star Kane only scored 16 times during four spells away from Tottenham before bursting onto the scene to earn a place in the Three Lions’ squad for Euro 2016.

And Abraham is determined to get into Gareth Southgate’s thinking by scoring the goals to keep the in-form Swans flying.

“Harry is a player I’ve always looked up to,” said Abraham. “He’s one of the great strikers so I’ve always followed his past and what he’s been through which gives me confidence.

“He showed there’s always light at the end of the tunnel so for me I just have to try my best.

“Now I’m back fit I would love to make a big impact and get to the World Cup, my performance against Notts County will give me massive confidence to push on, show my true potential and hopefully get my chance.”

Abraham was thrown into deep waters against Germany and Brazil after impressing with five goals in his first 10 matches in South Wales.

Some post-match advice from Southgate was still ringing in his ears before his season was turned on its head as Swansea’s relegation struggles coupled with a niggling back injury kept him out of the goals.

Jordan Ayew has been Carlos Carvalhal’s first choice up front during their eight-match unbeaten run, but a season-ending injury to Wilfried Bony could give Abraham the chance to shine during their resurgence under the Portugese manager.

And he believes the grey clouds that were swirling over the Liberty Stadium have helped him mature.

“That confidence that I can perform on the international stage is something I’ve grown into this season,” added Abraham, who scored 26 goals for Bristol City last season.

“After the two games with England, Gareth Southgate told me it was going to be tough at Swansea with the position we were in. But he told me to keep working as hard as I can and believe in yourself to help get the team of a mess.

“I handled coming up to the Premier League well in the first couple of months before we had the setbacks. Now we’re pushing on and the confidence is back.

“I’ve built aspects of my game, not just scoring goals, and also going through the ugly side of football helps me grow as a person.”

Abraham will be hoping to impress to earn an international call-up for the friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy in March.

His full attention must first turn to Burnley on Saturday, where a win could propel Swansea up to 12th in the table.

Abraham admits those World Cup warm-ups are a distant target, but he knows he must add to his pair of FA Cup strikes to challenge the likes of Kane and Marcus Rashford.

“Those England games coming up are at the back of my mind,” admitted Abraham. “I know I have to keep putting in performances to get back into that team and when I’m given the chance prove what I can do.

“Wherever I go I like to give my heart and my heart is here. I have to prove myself this season and then I’ll think about the future later. Whatever position Swansea are in, I’m in as well.

“This result shows we’re heading in the right direction and hopefully we can keep on pushing heading into the Burnley game now.”
