Real Madrid have officially signed their first player this summer, as the Spanish giants have confirmed the arrival of Zorya Luhansk goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. A number of top clubs, namely Inter Milan and Liverpool had reportedly scouted Lunin, who is 19 years old. However, the European champions have snapped up the lad on a six-year deal.
Real were expected to lure the likes of David de Gea of Manchester United or Allison of AS Roma. The club, however, has made a startling yet exciting decision regarding their goalkeeping future.
Lunin was previously a part of Ukrainian club Dnipro’s youth setup, before making a move to Zorya Luhansk last summer. He also made six appearances in the UEFA Europa League last season, and was a regular for Zorya for majority of the campaign.
This apparently meant that the lad attracted interest from the like of Liverpool, who are searching for solutions to their goalkeeping woes of late.
At such a young age, it is almost given that Lunin would not be drafted into the first team straightaway. Moreover, Navas has impressed in this edition of the FIFA World Cup yet again, performing brilliantly against Brazil in Costa Rica’s second group match.
The teenager might as well be sent on a loan move, to gain some valuable playing time – a decision that new manager Julen Lopategui will have to make.
This aso seems to be an indication of Real's somewhat revised transfer strategy of going after the most promising young footballers in the world. Lunin might not be immediately threaten Nvas' for the starting spot. However, this shows that the Madristas are already looking well into the future and their fans are sure to appreciate the change in vision.
