Phil Thompson wants Manchester United target Harry Maguire at Liverpool

Former Liverpool player and legend Phil Thompson has urged the Merseyside club to beat fierce rivals Manchester United to the signing of Harry Maguire. According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils had been in hot pursuit of the centre-back and were expected to place a potential world-record bid before the summer window slams shut.

Maguire had a dream run in the World Cup with the three Lions, who finished 4th in the tournament. His run of authoritative performances for Gareth Southgate’s side in defence has seen his price tag and demands rise up by a significant amount.

Jose Mourinho and co. were heavily linked with the former Hull City defender since the trading window had opened. However, the Foxes remained rather stubborn and held on to his services.

“I like what Jurgen Klopp has done by trying to strengthen the players behind the front three and get more goals from that area. That part of the team is where you win titles and Fabinho, Shaqiri and Keita can provide that additional firepower. Lallana is also back,” Thompson said.

“With one more centre-back, Liverpool can be a real force; I'd be looking at snatching Harry Maguire from under Manchester United's noses.”

Klopp’s side take on West Ham United at home on 12th August whereas Manchester United could face their top transfer target when they welcome Leicester City in the opening game of the Premier League.

While United endured a rather disappointing window, Liverpool bolstered their ranks with the signings of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker.

And if they snatch Maguire this coming January, it would be a fair speculation to state that they will have to beat their own record of £75 million spent on bringing Virgil van Dijk to Anfield last January.
