Manchester United terminate forward’s contract with immediate effect

Manchester United and Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic have parted ways after the club announced that they have terminated his contract with immediate effect late on Thursday. The Swede became one of the first stars to sign for United after Jose Mourinho took over the reins last summer.

Arriving from PSG at the age of 34, many suspected that the Swede would struggle to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. Ibrahimovic, however, had plans of his own as he became the standout in what was a largely disappointing season for United in 2016/17.

The 36-year-old scored 28 goals for United last season in all competitions as the Red Devils won the Europa League and the EFL Cup.

A statement published to United’s official club website on Thursday read: “Manchester United confirms that it has agreed to the termination of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s contract with immediate effect.

“Everyone at the club would like to thank Zlatan for his contribution to the team since his arrival and wishes him well for the future.”

Great things also come to an end and it is time to move on after two fantastic seasons with Manchester United. Thank you to the club, the fans, the team, the coach, the staff and everybody who shared with me this part of my history. #foreverred pic.twitter.com/vo1Gs3SUHL

Ibrahimovic went down in April last year after suffering a horrendous knee injury. And whilst the club gave him a new contract in the summer and the world saw him make a quicker-than-expected return in November, he has struggled to get to his earlier levels.

The forward had made only seven appearances for United this season. His last appearance in a United shirt came in a 2-2 draw against Burnley when he was substituted at halftime.

Where will he go now?

Ibrahimovic is expected to sign fly across the Atlantic in the coming days to sign for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy. The Ajax academy product has time and again been linked with a move to the United States in the past couple of years.

The striker, however, resisted the move time and again as he believed he still had something left in his tank for European football.

The Galaxy was home for another Manchester United legend – David Beckham – who spent five years with the club between 2007 and 2012.
