Manchester United News: Lukaku explains why he chose Man Utd over Chelsea

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard helped Manchester United run out 2-1 winners over Chelsea this week. The crucial three points sees the Red Devils reclaim their second spot on the Premier League after being displaced for some hours following Liverpool’s thumping of West Ham United.
Chelsea were the club that brought Lukaku over to England whilst still a teenager. The Belgian, who was touted to one day take over from Didier Drogba one day, however, never got his chances at Stamford.
That led to two separate loan deals to West Brom and Everton before the Toffees decided to break their transfer record to bring the talented Lukaku to Merseyside.
It was an open secret that Lukaku would be leaving Goodison Park last summer and Chelsea was believed to be the frontrunners as well as the 24-year-old’s choice at finding a new home.
However, a long wait for his move ended when Manchester United had a bid of an initial fee of £75million agreed.
Speaking about the move and snubbing Chelsea, the United number nine stated, “No, no, no. When I make a choice it’s with my head and my heart. I made the right choice for me.
“As you can see, I’m in a good situation. I’m with a manager and players who push me every day. The challenge is there to win and it’s something that I wanted.”
Deserves more respect
Lukaku has come under the scanner this season for his performances with the Belgian getting a lot of flak for failing to score against the top sides. The former Anderlecht man, however, feels that he deserves more respect than he gets in the media circles and reminded everyone what he has done over the years.
“I think I have got a nice record. I’ve scored a lot this season and I just want to keep going. I know that I can improve and I want to improve and really work hard. I want to win trophies. We are still in the fight in two competitions. It’s not going to be easy but it’s a nice challenge.
“I’m 24 and I think I have a lot of years ahead of me to improve before my prime so I’m never satisfied. I always want to improve and get better and it’s a nice challenge.
“[Do people forget how young I am?] Yeah, because I’ve been in the game for so long. I started playing when I was 16.
“Year in, year out people expect 20 goals from me. I’ve been doing it for [almost] ten years straight so I think I’ve proved myself.
“You expect a bit more respect but it’s the situation we’re in. I don’t listen to it. I just want to improve and show the people what I can do on the pitch.
“I’m playing for the biggest club in the world. It’s something that I wanted, but it’s not only that. I just want to win trophies.”
Manchester United look one of the favourites to qualify for the Champions League and despite being second in the Premier League that would be Jose Mourinho’s primary target with Manchester City 13 points ahead with a game in hand.
Lukaku will again scrutinised by all and sundry when the Red Devils take on Sevilla in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 encounter. The first leg of the encounter ended as a goalless draw as United clearly looked second-best for most parts of the game with Lukaku’s performance being heavily criticised.
