Manchester United approach Leicester for £65m-rated defender, Harry Maguire – Reports

Having captured the services of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant this summer, Jose Mourinho is ready to make a splash again, with Leicester City defender Harry Maguire emerging as the Manchester United manager’s prime target. Leicester have slapped a price tag of £65m on the young defender who starred for England at the World Cup, but that is unlikely to dissuade United from making an approach for the player.

Maguire joined Leicester before the start of last season for £17m from Hull City and had a stellar campaign, winning Leicester’s Player of the Year award. His performances also earned him a spot on the World Cup squad and he was the pick of the English players in Russia, sending his stock skyrocketing.

The 25-year-old played all 38 games for Leicester last season and also featured in each of England’s matches at the World Cup, a testament to his fitness and perseverance.

According to Sky Sports, United are set to make an opening bid in the region of £60m, but Leicester might not be willing to sell considering they lost Riyad Mahrez to Manchester City earlier in the summer.

Mourinho is on the lookout for a ball-playing centre-back, having given up on the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo. Maguire, apart from being an aerial threat from set-pieces, is pretty handy at carrying the ball out from defence and picking out the right pass, one of Jose’s main criterion in a centre-half.

Maguire still has four years left on his current contract and with Leicester still firm in their stance of not selling, the Red Devils might just have to turn to their other top target, Toby Alderweireld, especially considering he will be available for a similar price.

Alderweireld is a much more accomplished defender than Maguire at the moment and would add much needed solidity to the United backline.
