MANCHESTER UNITED have been handed a boost in their pursuit of a new defender.
That is because Real Madrid are reportedly planning a mass summer sale and one of their key centre-backs is up for grabs.
Real are having a terrible season which was compounded further by a 1-0 defeat against Espanyol last night.
Los Blancos currently sit third in the table – 14 points behind Barcelona having played one game more.
Zinedine Zidane’s side also crashed out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter-final stage.
According to Spanish outlet Diario Gol, president Flortentino Perez has decided on the three players which he wishes to offload this summer.
Midfielder Isco is one of the men Perez is keen to sell on, along with Mateo Kovacic, who has only been on the fringes of the first team this season.
But it is the inclusion of Raphael Varane to the list that could have Manchester United heads turning.
Diario Gol add that the Frenchman will be available for £50million in the summer.
United came close to singing the defender in 2016 to be reunited with former boss Jose Mourinho.
Speaking at the time, Varane said: 'I had a special relationship with Mourinho.
“With [Carlo] Ancelotti, I played less but he did extraordinary things at Real Madrid and that is what counts.
'I wanted to know if the club was in line with my project, that I would play.
'The president and the coach told me they were going in my direction. I put my head down and I worked hard during the pre-season training.'
The Red Devils have already expressed their desire to strengthen further in the summer.
