Lloris handed heavy sanctions after admitting to drink-driving

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted that he was over twice the drink-drive limit when he was caught by the police on 24 August in Central London. As a result, Lloris has been fined £50,000 and handed a 20-month ban from driving by the Westminster magistrates court.

Lloris was apparently driving a Porsche Panamera at 15mph in a 30mph zone when he was pulled over by the arresting officers. The French World Cup-winning keeper also allegedly swerved towards a bunch of parked vehicles before regaining control of his car and running a red light before bringing it to a halt. He also had to be helped out of the vehicle, with officers spotting vomit in the car.

Amanda Barron, the magistrate tasked with sentencing Lloris, explained that the punishment was meted out keeping in mind the seriousness of the crime as well as the financial status of the individual in question.

“This is a very serious offence, as you know. Not only were you putting your own life at risk but also that of your passenger. It was pure luck that you did not cause damage to other vehicles or pedestrians in the central London area,” she stated.

According to the court, the sample Lloris submitted for testing contained around 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 milliliters, which is well above the legal limit (35 microgrammes) for the country. The 31-year-old had apparently been dining with a bunch of friends, who had proceeded to shower him with drinks.

Lloris was photographed wearing a dark suit without a tie on his way into the court flanked by a few members of his entourage.

David Sonn, who represented the player in court, was quoted saying, 'On July 15 he was arguably the proudest man on the planet [having captained France to the World Cup victory]. Just 40 days later, he was arrested. He experienced the indignity of being handcuffed and put in a police station overnight.

'The spectacular fall from grace is not lost on Mr Lloris.”
