Liverpool signs Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City on a long-term deal

Xherdan Shaqiri signs for Liverpool

Liverpool have snapped up Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City for a reported fee of £13.75million. They have acquired his services after triggering a £13m release clause.

Although the duration in his deal isn’t mentioned yet, it is expected to be a long-term contract. 'I'm very happy to be here. It's a huge club with big history, big players and a fantastic coach,' Shaqiri said.

Shaqiri was a part of the Bayern Munich side that won the 2012-13 Champions League, where they crushed arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final.

The Swiss international had eyed a move to Anfield back in 2014, but the move failed to materialise due to Bayern’s reluctance. Back then, the German giants blocked the transfer, which forced him to join Inter Milan a year later.

However, after failing to shine in Serie A, the Swiss international was snapped by Mark Hughes in the summer of 2015.

Despite his effort, he couldn’t save keep the Potters in the Premier League and it became evident this summer that the winger would hit the exit doors at Stoke. And that led to long-term admirer Jurgen Klopp to pursuit him this summer.

At the ripe age of 26 and his best years arguably ahead of him, Shaqiri could prove to be another great attacking acquisition for the Reds.

'As a player you always want to be on the biggest stage in football. A few years ago I wanted to come too but it didn’t happen. I'm really happy that now I'm finally here. I want to improve myself too, I want to be with the best and I want to win titles. That's what I’m here for,' he added.

He laboured 15 goals in 92 appearances for the Potters. He becomes the third signing the Reds have made this transfer window, following the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita.

Klopp’s men take on Borussia Dortmund in the international Champions Cup on 23rd July in the US – a tournament where the winger is expected to star in.

His signing will surely improve Liverpool’s attacking prowess, adding strength and depth to the Liverpool squad. He is also expected to provide good competition to Mohamed Salah and other wingers.

Shaqiri’s pace, ability to find the net from distance and technical capabilities will certainly improve the Merseyside club’s chances of challenging for trophies.
