Liverpool fans call for Jordan Henderson’s axing after dismal performance

Following a disastrous performance against Chelsea in the Premier League, Liverpool fans have come down hard on midfielder Jordan Henderson, urging manager Jurgen Klopp to offload him at the earliest.

Liverpool squared off against Chelsea for the second time in a week after their clash in the Carabao Cup, and stole a point courtesy a late, late screamer from super-sub Daniel Sturridge. However, the positive result was not enough to mask club captain Henderson’s woeful outing.

The English midfielder sat out the 2-1 defeat in the Cup but returned to the starting lineup for the league clash, occupying his usual central role alongside Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner while the likes of Naby Keita and Fabinho watched on from the sidelines.

Henderson put in a woeful performance, slowing down a number of Liverpool attacks and recycling possession far too often. He was replaced late in the second half but not before fans took to social media to voice their opinion on the 28-year-old.

A majority, who were of the opinion that Henderson only finds himself in the starting lineup since he’s the captain, felt that he should hand over the captain’s armband to someone more deserving of it (read Van Dijk). They also urged Klopp to try and get rid of Hendo by January.

While it is true that Henderson has struggled to keep up with the intensity that comes with a big game, he is still Liverpool’s best and most vocal leader on the pitch. While he is obviously not on par with the likes of Keita and Fabinho from a technical standpoint, he does offer a different skill set to the side, one which Klopp seems to have taken a liking to.

However, performances like the one he put in against Chelsea could spell the end of the English midfielder and he will need to pull his socks up if he is to retain his spot in the side. It is unlikely he will be sold in January, especially considering the start Liverpool have had with him in the side, and Reds fans may have to be content watching him captain the team at least until the summer.
