Lionel Messi Misses Another Penalty: Is His Record That Bad? We Take a Look
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi made news for all the wrong reasons last night, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner showing he is human after all, missing a penalty in the 60th minute against Espanyol in the first leg of the quarter-final of the Copa del Rey last night.
The spot kick by Messi was saved by Diego Lopez who once again proved to be a good presence in goal, pulling off a marvellous save. The 30-year-old has admitted that he needs to do better when it comes to spot-kicks but that does not stop him from taking penalties.
3 – Lionel Messi has missed more penalties than any other La Liga player this season in all competitions (three from six attempts). Strange. pic.twitter.com/rVgz6du5nY

According to Opta stats, the Argentinian is not really that good from the spot as seen by the stats, with Messi missing the most amount of penalties this season than any other La Liga player in all competitions, converting only three from six attempts.
This was Messi's 100TH penalty for club and country in regular time.
Balance:

— 77 scored
— 22 missed

However, despite some glaring misses the superstar has a pretty decent record from the spot in his career, scoring in 77 from 100 attempts and who can forget the assist too, which saw Luis Suarez putting it in goal.
1 – Diego López is the only Espanyol goalkeeper to have saved a penalty taken by Lionel Messi in all competitions. Giant.

2 – Diego Lopez has saved more penalties against Lionel Messi than any other goalkeeper (all competitions). Titan.

The genius does struggle against one goalkeeper in particular when it comes to penalties and that is the same man from last night – Diego Lopez. The former Real Madrid man is the only keeper to have saved a penalty by Messi in all competitions and has saved more penalties from him than any other shot stopper.
Messi's 20 penalty failures for Barcelona:
10 — La Liga (out of 59)
06 — Copa del Rey (out of 9)
03 — Champions League (out of 14)
01 — Supercopa (out of 4) pic.twitter.com/xqIbHxToiI— MESSISTATS (@MessiStats_) January 17, 2018
The next time a team wants to ensure that Messi will not score from the spot, make sure that Diego Lopez is in goal.
