Lionel Messi creates history in Barcelona’s 8-2 win over Huesca

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi reached yet another milestone as he became the first player in the history of LaLiga to provide 150 assists in the competition in the 21st century. Messi achieved this feat during Barcelona's 8-2 thrashing of Huesca in which he scored two goals and assisted twice.

Huesca went ahead as early as the third minute at the Camp Nou before Messi took things into his own hands. He equalized 13 minutes later before Jorge Pulido put the ball into his own net to make it 2-1 in favour of the hosts. Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele added more misery by making it 4-2 before Messi provided Ivan Rakitic with a beautiful dink and the Croat slotted the ball into the net to give Messi his 150th assist in the competition.

He added one more goal and an assist to Jordi Alba to finish off a memorable day. He could have easily got his hat-trick but he decided to let Suarez take the penalty as Barcelona hammered the newcomers 8-2 to move to the top of the LaLiga table on goal difference.

Messi is on top of the assists chart in LaLiga and is followed by Cesc Fabregas (143), Mesut Ozil (128), Cristiano Ronaldo (122) and Dani Alves (110). It is certain that the record will stay with the Argentine international for a long time as none of these players is a part of LaLiga anymore. Among the current set of players, Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and Atletico Madrid's Koke are behind Messi with 66 and 64 assists respectively.

With his brace against Huesca, Messi also leapfrogged Real Madrid trio of Benzema, Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos to become the leading goalscorer in the league this season. He is currently tied with Benzema with four goals but he is ahead of the Frenchman on the virtue of providing more assists.
