Jannik Vestergaard joins Southampton

Southampton have announced their latest signing in Jannik Vestergaard, who has inscribed a four-year deal. He completed his switch from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee of £18m, according to claims from Sky Sports. Saints’ boss Mark Hughes hinted that they had to “fight off a lot of competition” to land him at St. Mary’s.
Vestergaard was a part of Denmark’s World Cup squad that travelled to Russia, but failed to make an appearance and serve his country.
Having played eight seasons in Bundesliga for a host of well-reputed clubs, he was sure to attract attention from the Premier League. The Saints had been casting a keen eye on his performances in the German league. However, they finally decided to take a step up their interests in this summer transfer window.
'I knew of the interest before the World Cup and the club has followed me for quite some time and done a lot of scouting, which is also a good sign for me that they know my strengths and weaknesses,' the centre-back told Southampton’s official website.
More importantly, he is happy to be a Saint. 'The degree to which the club wanted me was important in my decision. They had done a lot of research, seen a lot of live games and on video as well. I feel I'm at a really good place to develop. After seeing the place, I have only seen nice people and smiles on faces. I feel very welcome,' the 25-year-old added.
Amidst a busy spending spree, his inclusion means that they have now completed four signings. The Dane has followed Stuart Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Angus Gunn to Hampshire.
The defender will face his old club when Southampton play Monchengladbach on 4th August. However, their next fixture is against Derby County at Pride Park, on the 21st of this month.
Standing tall at 6ft 6in, he is a titanic figure at the back. Almost unbeatable in the aerial aspect of the game, Vestergaard will also be a key man to have in the opposition penalty area. He combines his stature with physicality and sharpness, which will undoubtedly strengthen the Saints’ back line. Whether or not he will fill in the big boots of Virgil Van Dijk, is yet to be learned.
