Is Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City the best Premier League side ever?

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are cruising through the premier league this season with 38 points in 14 matches. They haven’t lost a match in the league yet and are looking to wrap up the title for a second consecutive year. Last year, City finished with England’s first ever 100-point top-flight total losing just 14 points on their way. But the question that arises is, are they shaping into one of the best Premier League sides? Surely they have a long way to go, but they need to iron out some errors at first.

By this time last season, Manchester City have already scored two more goals and had an 8 point cushion over second place, but they conceded three more goals. But this season, the race for the premier league has tightened up with Klopp’s Liverpool playing a more composed game and Sarri’s Chelsea playing a compact passing game.

Since 1992 there have been some special Premier League sides. Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United 1998-99 treble-winning season, Jose Mourinho’s three victorious Chelsea sides, and of course Wenger’s history-making ‘Invincibles.’  Wenger combined a stylish flair of play with athleticism and sheer determination which achieved a unique feat in combining incisive attacking play with a strong defensive grit. Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2004-05 season set records galore. They annihilated the Premier League points record, achieving a total of 95 points and conceding just 15 goals, both of which remain Premier League records. Sir Alex’s Manchester United had several seasons of incredible domination. But it is their unrivaled ability to churn out titles over several years that Manchester City must match to become the greatest premier league side of all times.

Guardiola’s City obviously does not have so many feathers in their crown, but they are not very much far. They have got the potential to be something incredible and are breaking records already. They are a young side, and they’ve got the potential and the manager to get to those heights compared to Arsene’s Invincibles or Jose’s Chelsea. To be honest, City hasn’t won anything major except the Premier League once. Despite certain positions, they have the best players available in every position accompanied by Guardiola’s brilliant tactician mind. Their bench strength is fairly strong too. But to be the best, the real challenge will be to continue their unbeaten run in the Premier League until the 38th game and winning the premier league with a record goal difference. Only then, there can be talks of Guardiola’s city being the best premier league side ever.
