Dutchman Could Return To United – Mourinho

Memphis Depay churned out an outstanding performance as Lyon stunned Manchester City with a 2-1 win at the Etihad in their first Champions League game of the season. He grabbed an assist as the French outfit positioned themselves at the top of the table in Group F.

Following his impressive display against the Citizens, Jose Mourinho revealed that he hasn't ruled out a return for the Dutchman to his old club, Manchester United.

Memphis Depay was signed for £25 million in 2015 by Louis Van Gaal from PSV Eindhoven.

However, after what seemed to be a promising start to his Old Trafford career, the 24-year-old struggled to make an impact and found himself down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho. In an attempt to resurrect his career, he moved to Lyon in a cut-price £16 million deal in the summer of 2017.

However, the United chief cleverly inserted a buy-back clause in the deal that keeps his return to England on the cards.

Depay came out with flying colours at Lyon in his first season, netting 22 goals and forming a fearsome partnership with ex-Liverpool target Nabil Fekir.

Despite failing to impress in the Premier League, Mourinho reckons Depay could return to the club in the future.

On being asked why, he said: “Because potentially he’s a very good player.”

“I think when Mr Van Gaal decided to buy him he did well, he knew him very well from the national team, he was very young when at the World Cup he had flashes of top quality.”

“He was playing well in Holland, we know the Dutch league is not the same but he was showing very good things.”

“So I think Mr Van Gaal and Manchester United did very well to buy him.”

“He didn’t succeed in his 18 months but he’s very young.”

“I think it’s important for the club to complete control of this talent and we all wish he plays very, very well at Lyon and why not to come back because everyone here likes him.”

It remains to be seen whether the former number 7 of Manchester United agrees to follow the footsteps of Paul Pogba in the near future and return to Old Trafford.
