Chelsea news: Steve Sidwell makes big Premier League claim

FORMER Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell has made a big claim regarding his old side.

The 35-year-old, who currently plies his trade for Brighton, was discussing the Blues’ form on Sky Sports’ The Debate.

Chelsea leapfrogged Tottenham into fourth place in the Premier League table with a 3-0 win at home to West Brom on Monday.

However, they face a tough task against Barcelona in the Champions League next week before back-to-back away trips to Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manager Antonio Conte has apparently been at war with owner Roman Abramovich over the club’s transfer policy.

And there have been questions hanging over the Italian’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Because of all of the off-field antics, Sidwell thinks the west London club would consider it a good season if they mustered a fourth-placed finish, despite winning the title last time out.

“Chelsea will have done well to get the top four considering how they have been on and off the pitch,” Sidwell told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“To finish fourth would be a good season for them.

“It has been very disjointed from top to bottom.

“We don’t know who is bringing the signings in, the manager’s demeanour, the players. It all just seems very disjointed.

“For them to keep grinding results out week in, week out, then if they keep pushing for the top four.”

Meanwhile, fellow pundit Dennis Wise thinks it will be a close battle for the Champions League spots.

“It’s a big fight and it’s very close,” Wise said.

“It will be interesting to see how it pans itself out at the end.

“If Chelsea go and beat Man Utd then they will be in this position.”
