Chelsea news: Blues hero reveals REAL reason Antonio Conte lost to Man Utd
FORMER Chelsea star Tommy Langley has blamed the game against Barcelona midweek as the reason why Antonio Conte was unable to get a result against Manchester United.
Both sides went into the contest knowing it could prove pivotal in the race for a top four finish.
Liverpool and Tottenham had already won against West Ham and Crystal Palace respectively meaning neither Chelsea or United could afford to drop points.
The Blues hadn’t won at Old Trafford since 2013 prior to kick-off and they were unable to break their duck as Jose Mourinho led his team to a 2-1 victory.
It puts the Red Devils second in the table, six points ahead of Chelsea who dropped down to fifth.
But, despite Chelsea having an extra days rest and not having travelled like United did for their match against Sevilla, Langley believes the Barcelona game had a profound effect on Conte’s side.
'Look, Tuesday night was tough for us. We worked very hard to close down a very good Barcelona team', Langley said on Chelsea TV.
'The boys got tired up front and maybe, just maybe, they worked so hard on Tuesday night it had an effect in that second half.
'But in saying that we should do better in the second half and the goal itself was horrendous.'
It doesn’t get easier for Chelsea though as their next fixture is an away trip to league leaders Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side are unbeaten at the Etihad all season, winning 19 of 20 in all competitions.
