Chelsea have reportedly set sights on signing Pepe Reina according to reports in Italy. The Blues have also readied a £9 million bid as per the report.
Reina joined AC Milan a few days ago after his release from Napoli. The Italian joined on a free transfer and has joined the squad in the USA for the International Champions Cup.
Chelsea are searching for a new goalkeeper as Thibaut Courtois is edging closer to Real Madrid. The Belgian has refused to sign a new contract, and The Blues do not want to take a chance of losing him for free. He has just one year left on his contract.
Several keepers have been linked with Chelsea this summer so far and the latest one is Pepe Reina. The move will also reunite Maurizio Sarri with the player he managed at Napoli.
Sarri reportedly trusts the Spaniard and wants him to be the first choice for next season. The goalkeeper is not unfamiliar with the Premier League as he was a Liverpool player for 9 years before leaving for Serie A.
Meanwhile, Rob Green is set to undergo his Chelsea medical today. He will be joining the club as the third choice keeper – a backup for Willy Caballero and the incoming goalkeeper.
The signings on Green is a smart one as Chelsea will have an Englishman in the squad and an experienced backup too. The need for an Englishman is because of the Homegrown quota – the rule which requires a club to have at least eight players of English origin or players from their academy.
Other goalkeepers Chelsea have been linked with include Petr Cech, Jan Oblak, Alphonse Areola and young goalkeepers like Gianluigi Donnarumma, Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford to fill the void.
