Barcelona’s pursuit of Miralem Pjanic makes no sense

Silly season isn’t almost upon us, it’s here already.

Not a day is going by at the moment it seems where our beautiful club isn’t the laughing stock of the rest of world football.

Now don’t get me wrong, Miralem Pjanic is a skilful, difficult customer, and has certainly proved his worth in a Juventus side that has dominated over the last few seasons, however, the Bosnian is 30 years of age.

Since when did Barcelona become so ‘progressive’ that they routinely signed players that were the wrong side of their peak playing years?

The latest rumours even suggest there could be ‘a few’ players that the Blaugranes will include in any deal to bring Pjanic to Camp Nou, and one of those is Jean-Clair Todibo.

So, let’s clear this up. We have a youngster who, for the most part, looks like he could be the long-term replacement for Gerard Pique.

He’s still a little raw admittedly, but there’s enough to suggest that he could become a real force in Barca’s back line in due course.

At just 20 years old, he has potentially over a decade ahead of him at the top level, but the club are willing to cast him, and others, aside, to make way for a player that probably has 3-4 years left in the game, and whose level of performance will likely get gradually worse, not better.

With the idea that Neymar and/or Lautaro Martinez will somehow right the wrongs of the last couple of seasons, it now appears that Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board are open to selling just about anyone they can get money for.

The devil-may-care attitude is their last shot at trying to bring back the glory days, before exiting stage left and leaving a messy, broken club in the hands ofthe next presidential incumbent.

Make no mistake, whether that’s Victor Font, Joan Laporta or anyone else, it will take them years to correct the continuous mistakes of the current board.

Both have a stated aim of restoring La Masia’s credibility and making academy players a focal point of the first team once again, however, in order to do so, they’ll somehow have to do so whilst ridding themselves of overpaid, over thirties such as Miralem Pjanic.

How on earth did it come to this?
