Barcelona News: Barca Director concerned over Lionel Messi future
Lionel Messi penned a new contract with Barcelona a few months ago that will see the Argentine superstar stay at the Nou Camp till 2021. The contract also includes a release clause of €700 million (£625 million) in wake of PSG activating the mammoth €222 million clause for Neymar.
However, Barcelona’s corporate director Pancho Schroder feels that Messi’s release clause might just not be high enough.
Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Schroder stated, “We set up a clause which we think is enough to have Messi retire at FC Barcelona.
'But having said that, we thought a year ago that the clause for Neymar was also good enough to retain the player, and that proved last summer not to be the case.'
'Looking at the future, I think, is difficult, but I don't have a crystal ball and things are getting a little bit crazy.'
Messi started his career with Barcelona playing for their U14 team. He made his senior debut at the young age of 16 in a friendly against Porto and has since gone on to score 600 goals for the Catalans.

Will it really happen?
The loss of Neymar to PSG in the summer was a blow to Barcelona in many facets. The Catalans have always pride themselves as one of the biggest players in the transfer market and with Neymar hitting the highway it was a blow not only in terms of losing a player but showing their rivals a sense of vulnerability.
When all is said and done one has to say that Neymar’s release clause was something that Barcelona never thought any club could touch. However, with PSG having a bottomless war chest at their behest, they have had to realign themselves with the current market.
€700 million certainly seems to be as prohibitive as it gets. However, as Schroeder indicated, a ‘crazy market’ like the one it is as present could well see one of the big movers in the market take a swing at Messi.
