Arsenal set to give iconic shirt number to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is said to be hours away from being announced as an Arsenal player after the Premier League side reportedly agreed a deal of £55.5 million with Borussia Dortmund. The Gabon international has already been subject to flak from the Dortmund fans over his departure and was earlier seen arriving at the Dortmund airport yesterday.
With the Gabon international set to be introduced to the world as a Gunner, there have already been queries as to which jersey number the forward will wear. It seems that all the queries have been laid to rest with Aubameyang seemingly deciding to wear the iconic number 14 shirt after his jersey was found in the Arsenal store.
The number was made famous by Thierry Henry – arguably the greatest player to play in the Premier League. Ever since Henry’s departure to Barcelona, the mantle of the number was taken over by Theo Walcott. The England international joined from Southampton as one of the hottest prospects in the world. He, however, failed to set the record books on fire like his predecessor in the number 14 shirt for Arsenal.
The number was left vacant when Walcott decided to join Everton earlier this month after spending an injury-riddled 11.5 years at The Emirates.

Aubameyang is set to be the most expensive buy in Arsenal’s history. The Gunners had earlier broken their transfer record this summer when the signed Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon for a sum of £46.5m
With Alexis Sanchez moving to Manchester United, Walcott’s departing for Merseyside and Olivier Giroud looking set for a move to Chelsea, Aubameyang’s arrival along with Henrikh Mkhitariyan will hopefully fuel new dreams for the three-time Premier League champions.
Aubameyang is also taking a huge chip on his shoulders by taking on the iconic jersey number. Hopefully, for the Arsenal fans he is more of a Henry rather than a Walcott.
