Arsenal legend hails Lionel Messi, chooses him over Zidane and Henry

Arsenal Robert Pires heaped praise on football icon Lionel Messi and placed him above his former teammates Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, who themselves are one of the finest players to have blessed the game. According to the former Arsenal midfielder, the Barcelona skipper has ‘something no one else has.’

Robert Pires racked up an illustrious, largely successful career. From his time at Marseille, Arsenal and Villarreal to his exploits with the France national team, the 46-year-old played alongside and against one of the very best, including Zidane, Henry, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In spite of witnessing the magic produced by these world-class individuals, Pires strongly believes Messi is miles ahead of the rest.

The Argentine exhibited his brilliance against fierce rivals Espanyol by converting two free-kicks and beautifully setting up a goal for Ousmane Dembele. Messi drew a lot of plaudits for the magic he showcased, including that from Pires.

The 1998 World Cup winner, while speaking to Mundo Deportivo, said:

“If he plays like he did against Espanyol, it is impossible to stop him. It was incredible. I have played with Zidane, Henry and [Juan Roman] Riquelme, and against Ronaldinho and Cristiano, but Messi has something that nobody else has. I don’t know if he is the best in history, but there are few where he is.”

Pires also opined on fellow countryman Antoine Griezmann’s decision to remain at Atletico Madrid, affirming:

“It was his decision and you have to respect it. He thought that it was the best place for him to play, because my question is: Where would he have played if he had gone to Barca?

You do not take away Messi from [Luis] Suarez, or vice versa. They are superior to Griezmann, who could play some matches, but not all of them, as is the case at Atletico. That is the difference.”

Meanwhile, Messi’s Barcelona side travel to Levante as they look to strengthen their grip at the top of the LaLiga table.
