Arsenal gave up on signing West Brom defender Jonny Evans because of two transfers

ARSENAL gave up on signing West Brom defender Jonny Evans because of their determination to get deals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan over the line.

Arsenal were heavily tipped to prise Evans away from West Brom during the January transfer window.

The Northern Ireland international, once of Manchester United, has been a huge hit at the Hawthorns ever since leaving Old Trafford back in the summer of 2015.

As well as the Gunners, Manchester City were also keen to secure his signature, though ultimately settled for landing Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao instead.

And the Daily Mail say Arsenal chose to give up on Evans to focus on two other transfers.

The north London giants experienced a mixed January.

Alexis Sanchez finally bid goodbye after months of speculation, snubbing City’s interest to join Manchester United instead.

But, though the 29-year-old jumped ship after three and a half successful years as an Arsenal player, the Gunners landed Henrikh Mkhitaryan in return.

Mkhitaryan has enjoyed a solid start to life at the Emirates, contributing four assists from his first four outings.

And the Daily Mail report Arsenal abandoned their pursuit of Evans to focus on signing Mkhitaryan instead.

The Armenia international was not the club’s sole arrival.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed on the dotted line from German side Borussia Dortmund.

The Gabon international was a difficult target with Dortmund holding firm.

And Arsenal were only to get a deal for the 28-year-old over the line after they agreed to pay Dortmund’s huge £53 million asking price.
