The last 16 La Liga Clubs will be eyeing a spot in the final stages of the Copa Del Rey 2020 edition. Barcelona will be looking to consolidate their record of being the most successful team in the tournament. Los Blancos will have to win against the 6-time winners of the tournament, Real Zaragoza, to reach the quarter final stage. Los Manos have been out of the top flight for a whopping 6 seasons in succession and will be looking to reverse things.

In other news, Gareth Bale will not be in the Real Madrid squad for the Copa Del Rey match since he is still recovering from an ankle injury. Leganes will be playing Barcelona at the latter’s home stadium and will be understandably nervous since they currently are second-last in the La Liga table and have never won any major title. They have won just 3 top-flight matches in the current season and will look to bypass relegation as their top priority. Barcelona had a little anxiety in the earlier round at Ibiza but Antoine Griezmann proved to be the savior with two goals after the Spanish giants were trailing to an opening goal by their opponents in the 9th minute.

Copa Del Rey History

The Copa Del Rey or La Copa is also called the Copa de Su Majestad el Rey or the Campeonato de Espana. This annual knockout contest is one of the highlights of the Spanish football season and is organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The competition is the oldest one in the history of Spanish football, being founded in the year 1903.

The winners of the Copa Del Rey will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League in the following season. In case they have already qualified for the same by virtue of the league position, then the spot is given to the highest-positioned league team who has not qualified as of yet. Barcelona has won the Copa Del Rey for a record 30 times, being the most successful club in this contest. They won their 4th consecutive title in the 2018 edition versus Sevilla. Athletic Bilbao has the second-highest tally of Copa Del Rey titles. Valencia will look to defend their title, having trounced Barcelona in the final in the year 2019. This was held at Seville’s Estadio Benito Villamarin.
