Willian says that he was held hostage at Tottenham for eight hours

Brazilian winger Willian has revealed some interesting details from his controversial transfer to Chelsea in 2013. Speaking to Brazilian TV shown Resenha, Willian provided some snarky insights about his move to Blues.

The 29-year-old was originally supposed to join Tottenham Hotspur and had even completed a medical with Spurs, but a late offer from Chelsea changed things up.  

Willian reportedly said, “You know my objective was to go to Chelsea, but since Chelsea don’t want, then we’re going to Tottenham. I said 'Oh, I’m going to sign with Tottenham, anyway, there’s no other option’.”

 

This clearly indicates that joining Chelsea was always his first priority. Willian continued, as he said, “Then we’re going in the van, on the way, get to the training centre, Kia, my agent, is already down there, waiting. I thought it was weird, he was already at the door. Then I got out of the van, he said, ‘we have problems’. I said ‘oh, what happened?’ Then he ‘Chelsea made an offer’. I said, ‘So make do, I’ll get back in the van, you’ll make do and I’ll go to Chelsea, I will not sign with Tottenham.”

Apparently, Tottenham were not keen to lose a player of Willian’s caliber to a direct rival, especially after having completed a medical with him. They resorted to certain unprofessional methods, which understandably did not go down well with the Brazilian.

In the same interview, Willian remarked, “I stayed there for eight hours in the training centre. Tottenham’s director said ‘I’m going to report you to FIFA, this and that, fans here in England will boo you, this and that’. They made up a lot of things. I got stuck there for eight hours. Then I left and I went straight to meet the Chelsea people to sort the details and sign.”

This particular transfer saga had generated a lot of interest considering the complications involved in it. Ever since his move to the Blues, Willian has developed to become an integral member of the first-team. He shared a great working relationship with Jose Mourinho, who was at the helm of the club when Willian signed for them. The former Shakhtar Donetsk player has won two Premier League titles and a FA Cup trophy too.

He has scored 25 goals, and notched 21 assists in 166 Premier League matches since his transfer to Chelsea in the 2013-14 season. However, his future at the club has been subject to speculation as there has been interest from FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United too.
