Transfer News: Arsenal sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund

Sokratis Papastathopoulos has completed his switch from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal to become the latest addition in the brand-new Unai Emery era. He has penned a long-term deal with the Gunners for an undisclosed fee, as per reports.

'I feel very good, it is my first day here, everything is special, it is a beautiful moment. I am very happy,' Sokratis told Arsenal’s official website.

Paying due respect and regarding the Gunners as one of the best in the country, he said, 'Arsenal is one of the three biggest clubs in the Premier League, it has a lot of fans, a very big history and I am very happy and for the next year I will be here to help the team.'

Since his arrival in 2013 at Dortmund, the Greek defender has won two Bundesliga titles and one German cup with Borussia.

The move makes him the third player to arrive at North London this summer following the arrivals of Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno to the Emirates. The Greece international will wear the number 5 shirt and is expected to compete with Shkodran Mustafi for the starting spot in the side.

He will also re-unite with his former teammates, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who had spent some fruitful time at Dortmund as well.

According to reports, the duo had called him many times and asked him to join Arsenal. 'I spoke to them a lot of times. They said the best thing about this club is that it's one big family and they called me also – not every day but a lot of times – to come here,' he added.

The 79-capped centre-half is renowned for his solidity, consistency and stubbornness while defending. A no-nonsense defender, many would say that his is the kind of player Arsenal require to get things sorted at the back.

Speaking about his resolve, he stated, 'I'm a normal defender. I like to defend. I like that my team doesn't take goals. I like a zero in the defence and I will do everything to help to achieve this goal.'
