Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal to miss Champions League clash with PSG

Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal will miss next week's Champions League round-of-16 opener against Paris Saint-Germain after UEFA rejected the Spanish club's appeal over his suspension.

The Spain international was handed a two-match ban by Europe's football governing body in December after being charged for deliberately seeking a yellow card during his team's 6-0 win over Apoel Nicosia on Nov. 21.

Carvajal was booked for wasting time when taking a throw-in, earning his third yellow card in the competition and initially triggering a one-match ban that would see him miss the final group-stage clash with Borussia Dortmund last year with his team already through to the next stage.

The 26-year-old sat out the 3-2 win over Dortmund but must now complete the suspension on Feb. 14 when PSG travel to the Santiago Bernabeu to face the current competition holders.

A statement from UEFA's disciplinary body said: 'The appeal lodged by Real Madrid CF has been dismissed and the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB)'s decision of 7 December is confirmed. Given that Carvajal did not participate in the match between Real Madrid CF and Borussia Dortmund played on 6 December 2017, the player still has to serve one (1) UEFA competition match for which he would be otherwise eligible.'

Carvajal will be available for the return leg in Paris on March 6.

Real Madrid received good news at the weekend with defender Sergio Ramos back in action in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Levante after almost a month sidelined with a calf problem.

However, Real coach Zinedine Zidane is still without central defender Jesus Vallejo and midfielder Dani Ceballos, both out injured.
