Paco Alcacer closes in on Watford loan move

Barcelona striker Paco Alcacer is closing in on a loan move to Premier League side Watford. Reports in Sport suggest the striker will sign a two-year loan deal with the option for a permanent move at the end of the loan spell.

Alcacer is not a part of manager Ernesto Valverde’s long-term plans and as a result is seeking a move away from the Catalan outfit. Alcacer is currently on tour in the US with the Barcelona side and it is up to him to decide if he wants to join the English side or not. He was initially holding out for a move to former club Valencia who were considering the option of offloading Rodrigo, but that appears to have hit a roadblock.

Watford, meanwhile, are unwilling to meet Barcelona’s evaluation of the striker and are instead keen on signing him on an extended loan-spell. The window for Premier League sides shuts in the coming week and Watford need to act quickly if they are to secure his services.

Alcacer joined Barcelona in the summer of 2016 but has failed to establish himself in a squad consisting of the likes of Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and co. and has been used mainly as an impact substitute. The 24-year-old featured for Barcelona 50 times across all competitions since his move, netting just 15 times, and is now looking for a move away in order to gain some more first-team football.

Watford have the likes of Troy Deeney, Stefano Okaka and Andre Gray in their ranks but Alcacer should be an upgrade on all three of those options, making him an automatic starter. The Hornets also signed Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona earlier in the summer aside from making a few other decent acquisitions and look set for a major run in the Premier League this time around.
