Diego Godin reveals the reason why he turned down Manchester United

Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin recently revealed the reason behind his decision to reject the advances of Manchester United this summer. The Red Devils boss, Jose Mourinho, was reportedly keen on bringing the Uruguayan World Cup star to Old Trafford this summer.

Godin, 32, represented a cheaper alternative than Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld, who was reportedly available for £70 million.

Mourinho made a late effort to sign the Atleti captain by triggering the £22.5 million release clause in the transfer window. However, Godin's refusal to sign for the English outfit invited doubts that he had used United as a leverage to get a better contract at Atletico.

But, Diego Godin has insisted that he has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“I have not renewed,” Godin said on Tuesday ahead of Atletico’s Super Cup final win against Real Madrid in Estonia.

“I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons.

“But I have not extended my contract.

“I saw that news came out but I do not know where it came from.”

Manchester United also made endeavours to sign Bayern Munich' Jerome Boateng, Leicester City's Harry Maguire as alternatives to Toby Alderweireld this summer. However, they were rejected on all fronts for various reasons, which is why they turned their attention to the Atleti skipper in the dying embers of the transfer market.

Diego Godin captained his side and played an integral part as Los Colchoneros started their season on a positive note with a 4-2 UEFA Super Cup win against cross-town rivals Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid will travel to Valencia for their season opener on Monday. In the meanwhile, Manchester United will look to build on their win against Leicester City as they face Brighton on Sunday.
