Manchester City eye £54 million rated defender Junior Firpo
- Updated: September 8, 2018
Reports in Spain suggest Manchester City are desperate to sign Real Betis defender, Junior Firpo. Pep Guardiola is said to be a big fan of the left-back and is urging City board to sign him.
The 22-year-old is a veratile player who has played in different positions. He mainly plays as a left-back but has also featured as a central defender and a winger for Betis B.
After impressing for the B side, Junior made his first-team debut in February. He has since then made 15 La Liga appearances for the Spanish outfit, scoring twice.
According to El Desmarque, City have been scouting Junior for some time. Guardiola has been impressed with what he has seen and wants to bring the Dominican to Etihad soon.
Junior recently signed a new 5-year deal at the club and has a €60 million release clause. The report states that the Citizens are not willing to match it and are looking to negotiate a price for him.
The 22-year-old has played all 90 minutes in the three La Liga matches so far this season. He is expected to continue playing regularly for them as he has made little to no errors in his position.
Guardiola wants him as aback for Benjamin Mendy. The Frenchman was out with an ACL injury last year and the manager had to play a makeshift left-back.
The City manager tried out Danilo and Fabian Delph at the position before sticking with the Englishman for the season. He does not want to be in a similar position once again and has asked the board to get him a left-back soon.
Oleksandr Zinchenko is the other option Guardiola has in his squad right now and he is not impressed with the youngster. The Ukrainian was set to be sold to Wolverhampton this summer but the move broke down. He was then set for a loan move to LaLiga but that too did not materialize.
