Loris Karius was 100% influenced by concussion during Champions League final, says Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool shot-stopper Loris Karius was 100% influenced by concussion during their Champions League final against Real Madrid, says Jurgen Klopp. His head injury succoured the Spanish giants in their 3-1 win against the Merseyside club. Karim Benzema’s opener and Gareth Bale’s second goal came due to howlers from the 25-year-old in between the sticks. 'We don't use it as an excuse, we use it as an explanation,' Klopp insisted.

After struggling for a few years, Liverpool have been revolutionized by Jurgen Klopp, who has turned them into a stronger club since taking over the reins in 2015. Having appeared in their previous Champions League final 11 years back, this was the worst possible way to finish runners-up.

The first half an hour of the game was bossed by the Reds, who attempted nine shots on goal, courtesy of their free-flowing attacking display. Clearly, they were the happier side going into half-time, despite losing their goal machine in Mohamed Salah due to injury.

It all began when Karius collided with Sergio Ramos, which then demanded attention from the medical team. Moments later, he gifted the ball to Benzema, who stuck his foot out while the goalkeeper was trying to pass and scored. When Liverpool upped the ante and looked to restore parity, Karius couldn’t thwart a Gareth Bale long-range effort away, which was directed straight at him. By then, the game was put to bed.

Five days after this heartbreak, tests concluded that he had 26 out of 30 markers indicating concussion.

The gloveman will be a part of Klopp’s squad that takes on Chester City in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. If he is to stay at the club, Karius must start a-fresh and put the Champions League final’s scars behind.

When he suffered a blow, either him or the medical team should have informed Klopp and asked for a substitution. Although nothing can be done about the unfortunate series of events that took place on the field that evening, the death threats that followed will remain as a black mark in this game’s glorious history.
