Liverpool news: Dejan Lovren fires fierce warning to Barcelona and Real Madrid

LIVERPOOL defender Dejan Lovren has made an incredible claim about the Champions League while hitting out at Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Liverpool were in scintillating form as they thrashed Porto 5-0 on Wednesday in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

The Croatia international partnered Virgil van Dijk as the Reds kept their fourth European clean sheet of the season

Liverpool should now cruise through to the quarter-finals when they host Porto at Anfield in three weeks’ time.

But Lovren is now thinking beyond that as he claims the Merseyside outfit can make it all the way and win the tournament.

“Why not? Of course (we can win it),' he told the Liverpool Echo.

'Yes, if we are right and we do our job like we did and everyone defends well – each centimetre of the pitch is covered – then we have a great chance.

“We have to take it step by step.

'Don't forget about Liverpool. We have so much quality so we can beat everyone if we are on our top level – as simple as that.'

European heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona are the favourites to lift the illustrious trophy.

And when asked if Liverpool can compete with the two Spanish giants, Lovren thinks his side will thrive as the underdogs.

“It is good when they don't talk about us,' Lovren said.

'Maybe they would consider them to be the favourites – even better. We are the underdogs I would say. I love that when people think that about us.

'It is something from deep inside that will explode but we need to be calm and finish the second game at home and let's see what happens later.'
