Kylian Mbappe follows the path of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo; takes the number 7 shirt at PSG

Kylian Mbappe has been awarded with the number 7 shirt at Paris Saint-Germain for the 2018-19 season and onwards. He previously wore number 29(the same number he wore at Monaco) when the French giants signed him an year ago.

Mbappe’s World Cup exploits for the champions along with a successful first season at France has garnered him a lot of praise from almost every footballing household. From a young kid who was full of quality, he has now become one of the hottest properties in world football.

Lucas Moura was frozen out at the French capital due to the arrivals of Neymar and Mbappe. As a result, he hit the exit doors and the number 7 shirt was vacated.

After a stunning World Cup campaign, where he won the silver ball accolade, his number 29 shirt was bound to get an upgrade. Another reason for him opting for this number could be the fact that he idolises Cristiano Ronaldo, who is known for his shirt number and widely regarded as ‘CR7’.

'For a long time, I said that numbers were unimportant and that it was something that only matters on the pitch,” he told the official website. Acknowledging the prestige of his new number, he said, “It is something of an affirmation. The No. 7 shirt is a legendary one — many greats have worn it. I hope that I will be able to do this number justice on the pitch.'

Social media has also represented this new personal brand of his with a 'K7lian' hashtag.

Paris Saint-Germain kick off their Ligue 1 season at home against Caen. The 19-year-old is not joining them for their Singapore tour but is expected to start the opening game of the league season.

Whether or not he will serve the purpose of this number previously or currently worn by a bracket of world-class players including David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Pires and Eric Cantona among others, is yet to be seen.
