EPL 2018/19: 5 reasons why Liverpool can win their first ever title

Liverpool have started the season like a team who mean business. The Reds demolished West Ham United by four goals to top the league table. Though it’s pointless looking at the table this early, the win will give the team plenty of confidence.

This season, Jürgen Klopp’s side look like real contenders for the elusive Premier League title. Manchester City have an impressive squad, but if there’s anyone who could stop them, it could be the team from Merseyside. Let’s take a look at why the Reds could win the league title this season…

Jürgen Klopp’s teams always play attractive football and the fans appreciate the work ethic off the ball. Their ability to win the ball high up the pitch instead of letting the opposition team knock it around is what makes the fans appreciate the style as it tends to result in a more open game.

It needs impressive squad depth to sustain the same level of Gegenpressing and that’s something Klopp didn’t have up until the on-going season. The club have strengthened well in the summer and the likes of Shaqiri, Fabinho, Alisson and Keita are all quality signings that add to the depth of the squad.

#4 In better shape defensively

Since making his Liverpool debut, no player has kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than Virgil van Dijk.

This is arguably the best Liverpool have looked defensively. Last season, the club played well to reach the final of the Champions League as Virgil van Dijk’s arrival in the winter transfer window helped the club stop the leakage of goals.

Alisson Becker is a ‘keeper who will win them at least 10 points a season and he is exactly what the club needed after Karius’ blunders last season. Fabinho is a defensive minded addition and he will add more protection to the back four.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal are in transition having hired new managers. Manchester United’s squad doesn’t necessarily have the balance that Jose Mourinho so badly wanted to work on during the summer, but couldn’t. That leaves us with Tottenham and Manchester City. Spurs again will heavily rely on Harry Kane and didn’t make any signings in the recently concluded transfer window.

Manchester City will once again be the team to stop and even though they have a better squad than Liverpool, Pep Guardiola and the club’s obsession with the Champions League could see them lose more points in the league than they did last season. That’s where Liverpool need to take advantage.

Liverpool’s front three were irresistible last season and there aren’t too many attackers better than the trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah at the moment. The depth factor as discussed also comes into play, but because how well the three complement each other, even a low block is going to find it hard to stop the Liverpool attack.

While Firmino is the combination of pace, trickery and tenacity, Mane offers the directness and the raw pace on the left. Mo Salah had a stunning debut campaign and his composure in front of goal is impeccable. Mind you, he too can pull off a dribble or two and can beat a defender for pace, so good luck trying to stop him.

Klopp won the league title at Dortmund in similar circumstances. It was his third full season in charge there, and it’s his third full season in charge of Liverpool as well. Brick by brick, he has built a mean Liverpool outfit as the days of Fabio Borini and Martin Skrtel starting are long gone.

Slowly, this team has been able to compete with the best sides in Europe and though they have fallen at the final hurdle multiple times, this could be the season where Liverpool finally lift some silverware.

There is a bit of pressure on the Reds this season, but with a better team this season, Klopp should be able to rally his team through to the finish line.
