Chelsea and Roma in race for Kasper Schmeichel’s signature – Reports

Chelsea FC and AS Roma are casting a keen eye on Leicester City shot-stopper, Kasper Schmeichel.

Both these clubs possess the world’s best goalkeepers in Thibaut Courtois and Alisson, who are both linked to moves away from their current teams. While Thibaut Courtois has hinted a move to Madrid, Alisson is wanted by a host of realistic suitors, namely Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Should their current number ones depart, either or both these sides will race for Kasper Schmeichel’s signature.

However, an asking price for him is not yet adjudicated by the Foxes.

Over the past four years, the 31 year old has grown in stature to become one of the country’s best glove men. Starting with Leicester’s survival challenge in the 2014-15 season, to their remarkable title-winning fairy tale the next year, to representing Denmark in major tournaments, Schmeichel has evolved and become a colossal figure between the sticks for club and country.

His market value would have certainly undergone a significant increase after his World Cup performances. Although Denmark couldn’t get the better of an in-form Croatian unit, Schmeichel stole all headlines after saving an array of penalties, along with the routine stops. He thwarted a Luka Modric penalty away in extra-time, to drag the game to penalties.

In the subsequent shoot-out, he saved two penalties more, but was let down by his compatriots who stepped up to take the spot-kick.

His current contract expires in 2021, which means that Chelsea or Roma will have to pay a good amount to snap him up. Also, the fact that Leicester are stubborn with transfer requests implies that signing their number one will be a tough ask.

However, Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea or Roma will not shy away from splashing cash, as they are expected to generate large revenue through Courtois’ and Alisson’s potential exit.
