Chelsea accepts Manchester United’s bid for Willian – Reports

Manchester United’s bid of about £66m has been accepted by Chelsea, according to Italian news  outlet Tuttosport. Both the sides have agreed upon terms and Willian could become the second Chelsea player switching to Manchester United in two years, following the transfer of Nemanja Matic.

Willian has spent five seasons at Chelsea, being their best player in the 2014-15 season when they finished 10th in the Premier League ladder. He is arguably the best forward in one-v-one situations in modern day football.

Jose Mourinho has been a long-term admirer of the Brazilian, who signed for Chelsea ahead of Tottenham five years back. Since then, Mourinho would play him at right-wing regularly, ahead of the likes of Andre Schurrle.

Since joining Manchester United, the Portuguese boss has been keen on a re-union with Willian, who was on Barcelona’s radar till they landed Malcom to the Nou Camp a few days back. In fact, a couple of official bids were rejected by Chelsea. But now, since the Blaugrana have bolstered their attacking options down the right flank, the Red Devils look to be the frontrunners in this race.

The 20-time league champions have been linked to a number of wingers this summer, including Gareth Bale and Ivan Perisic. Also to mention, they are in pursuit of a center-half. Reports in Italy add that along with Willian, Chelsea would also offer Gary Cahill, who would then become an alternative to the much-wanted Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld.

On the flip side, Maurizio Sarri is aiming to strengthen his squad and the possible departure of Willian could increase their funds.

Willian is currently resting after his World Cup exploits and will join the squad later.

Should this move materialize, this would be an excellent signing by Manchester United. Willian is quick, pacy and has a sharp eye for goal. He can flip-flap past opponents and create openings with ease. Also to add, he is more than used to the pace and requirements of the Premier League. With this, Mourinho might also land former colleague Gary Cahill, which would tick-mark their shopping list for this window.

Although funds are needed, the Blues need to be cognizant of the fact that they will be selling one of their most important players to a rival club. Hence, they need to astutely access this situation and try their level best to hold on to Willian.
