The match ended in a 3-1 victory for Dortmund, with Julian Brandt opening the scoring for the Black-and-Yellows early on, thanks to an assist from Mats Hummels. However, Ajax quickly equalized through Brian Brobbey, who capitalized on a delivery from Steven Bergwijn.
During the second half, Nmecha came on as a substitute for Marco Reus and wasted no time making an impact. Within 15 minutes of being on the field, the 22-year-old midfielder managed to score two goals. The first came when Ramy Bensebaini set up Sebastien Haller, who then provided an easy finish for Nmecha. The second goal saw Bensebaini again as the provider, and Nmecha showed patience and finesse to slot it into the net.
The Dortmund faithful had the opportunity to witness goalkeeper Alexander Meyer’s impressive performance, as he stood in for the injured Gregor Kobel and thwarted Ajax’s attempts to mount a comeback. This victory wrapped up Dortmund’s successful pre-season, as they remained unbeaten throughout, winning four games in a row before drawing 1-1 with Chelsea.
Julian Brandt, the prolific attacking midfielder, continued his goal-scoring form from last season by finding the back of the net in this match. On the other hand, Nmecha, who was with Wolfsburg last season, showed his scoring prowess with three Bundesliga goals and six assists.
Sebastien Haller, formerly of Ajax, had a notable presence in the match, and it was intriguing to see him play against his former club, where he scored an impressive 47 goals in 66 games before moving to Dortmund last summer. Interestingly, Donyell Malen, a fellow Dortmund attacker, spent eight years in Ajax’s academy, strengthening the ties between the two clubs.
Lastly, there has been a historical exchange of players between the two teams, with seven Dutch players having played for Dortmund, including Malen, and seven German players having represented Ajax, including Davy Klaassen and Brian Brobbey, who had prior stints in the Bundesliga with Bremen and RB Leipzig, respectively.
