Barcelona confirm Philippe Coutinho shirt number

Barcelona's new star man, Philippe Coutinho will wear the number 14 shirt, the club confirmed via their account on Twitter. The Brazilian will take over the number from Javier Mascherano – who is heading to China to play for Hebei China Fortune.

The Argentine has already said his goodbye but will be in attendance at the Nou Camp on Thursday to bid farewell to all the supporters ahead of their Copa del Rey clash against Espanyol.

The former Liverpool man, meanwhile, is expected to be in the squad for the game against Espanyol and one would expect him to make his Barcelona debut in the game.

He was recently included in the squad after being deemed fit in training by head coach, Ernesto Valverde.

The number 14 shirt was first made famous by Barcelona’s spiritual legend – Johan Cryuff. The Dutchman not only was a legend but also laid out the foundations for the ‘Barcelona way’ of football – which has left a long lasting mark on the style that they incorporate in their gameplay.

The shirt was also worn by the legendary Thierry Henry following his move from Arsenal.
