Arsenal sign Uruguayan midfilder Lucas Torreira

Arsenal have been aggressive this summer under new manager Unai Emery. The Gunners announced their fourth recruit of the summer. Lucas Torreira, the Uruguayan defensive midfielder, who represents Sampodria in the Serie A is set to undergo a medical examination at Arsenal.

Torreira played a key role in Uruguay’s impressive run in the World Cup this year, as his energetic presence at the centre of the park was praiseworthy and quite crucial for the proper functioning of the team.

Lucas has the reputation of being a strong holding midfielder who uses his tenacity and determination to win the ball back with great effect. A box-to-box midfielder, he drives the team forward with precise control and accurate passing from decisive positions.

For a long time now, Arsenal have lacked a strong figure at the centre of the park – someone who could break the opposition’s attacks and instill energy in dire situations. Torreira’s arrival from Sampdoria should change that situation.

Torreira represented Sampodria 36 times in the league last season, scoring four goals and assisting once. He put in 2.8 tackles, and intercepted the ball twice on an average in every game.

His performances in the World Cup were impressive as well. He caught the eyes especially when he nullified Portugal’s attacking threat by pressing them throughout the match – resulting in them losing the ball time and again.

It is quite refreshing to see an Arsenal manager address the problematic spots in the squad instantly upon his arrival. Arsene Wenger, for all his brilliant work with the club, effectively failed to replace Patrick Viera after the Frenchman’s departure from the club.

The Gunner’s attacking threat is enviable at the moment. However, with the midfield failing to impose itself on the opponent, they have failed to any serious challenge for the title in recent seasons.

Emery has identified the lack of a proper holding midfielder and Torreira should fit the bill.
