Arsenal News: Mesut Ozil break decade old Premier League record in win over Watford

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil became the fastest player to 50 assists in the Premier League beating the record previously held by Eric Cantona. The German international created the record when he set up Shkrodan Mustafi to score as the Gunners defeated Watford 3-0 on Sunday at The Emirates.

This Ozil’s third assist in two games after he had set up both goals in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Milan at the San Siro in their Europa League tie.

It took Ozil 141 Premier League games to reach the mark – which was two less than what Cantona needed. Following closely on their trails are two former Arsenal greats – exemplifying the kind of football Arsenal have been come to renowned for.

Dennis Bergkamp comes third on this list after he reached the 50 assist mark in 146 games whilst Cesc Fabregas managed to reach the feat in 165 games.

Fifth on the list is Manchester City talisman David Silva who took 166 games to record 50 assists.

A day of records for Arsenal

Arsenal opened their tally on Sunday thanks to Ozil’s assist. His beautifully delivery from a free-kick was thumped in by Mustafi as the German rose highest in the pack to direct the ball into the back of the net. The goals was also the North London side’s 1000th in the Premier League.

The home side doubled their lead when their other assist-king Henrikh Mkhitaryan set up his former Dortmund teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabon international returned the favour for the Armenian to slot in Arsenal’s third of the evening.

The night also saw Petr Cech save his first ever penalty for Arsenal in 16 attempts.
