Stuart Broad Opens Up on On-Field Spat With Ben Stokes in SA Test Series

England and South Africa are currently playing four-match Test series which is a part of the World Test Championship. The series is tied at 1-1 after England won the second Test match in Cape Town after the Proteas won the first Test in Centurion. However, the Centurion Test became a highlight for an entirely different reason. England players Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were involved in a bitter on-field spat which became the talking point of the Test match. The spat happened on the third day of the first Test match.

“We got a wicket and in the huddle afterwards, I said ‘Boys, I think we can up our standards out here, bowlers can hit the lengths harder, fielders can stop the ones, they’re on top of us with their energy’,” Broad was quoted as saying by Daily Mail. “Stokesy went ‘I don’t agree with you.’ Which is great. You don’t want yes men, do you?

“He said ‘I don’t agree with you, I think we’ve been good’. I said: ‘Fair enough, it’s just my opinion but I don’t think we’ve been very good’. And we had a bit of back and forth like that. I really liked that. A couple of minutes later he walked over and gave me a big fist pump and he even texted me that night saying something like ‘Sorry, mate, for that disagreement’.

Finally, the England pacer has come out and has spoken openly on the on-field spat. He said that Stokes was sorry for his deed and has even texted an apology to Broad. The England pacer has also replied to the all-rounder where he showed the perfect example of a sportsman’s spirit.

“There’s no need to say sorry. That’s sport. That’s what it’s about. It’s part of why communication is so strong in this group. The great thing about that was it was just two blokes trying to get England in a better place,” he added.

Meanwhile, former England skipper Nasser Hussain and legendary West Indies pacer Michael Holding who were commentating while the spat was going on, gave a clear picture of the conversation that happened between Broad and Stokes.

‘England’s hot in the weather and not feeling well. I’m pleased that a few words were exchanged to be honest. They’ve got a problem with each other. Broad has said something in the huddle that Stokes is not amused with and England’s vice-captain picks him up on it. I don’t mind that at all,’ said former captain and television commentator Nasser Hussain.

Former West Indies fast bowler and television commentator Michael Holding added: ‘Well that doesn’t look like a very friendly conversation, does it? I’m not sure what started it, but hopefully, it will end soon.’

England lost the first Test by 107 runs but came back to win the next Test match in Cape Town and level the series. The final two matches of the four-match series will be played at Port Elizabeth (Jan 16-20) and Johannesburg (Jan 24-28) respectively.
