IPL 2020: 5 CPL Stars who can get huge amount in the IPL Auction 2020

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is arguably the biggest sporting extravaganza in the cricketing world globally. There are several other global T20 leagues and tournaments which provide ample exposure to budding superstars prior to them getting into the international cricketing orbit.

Playing international cricket means dealing with immense pressure to perform and meet expectations. Several T20 leagues have come up globally over the last few years and these offer similar levels of competition and engagement for players even before they get to the next levels. IPL has always been the benchmark for the quality of cricket played in the T20 format.

Ahead of IPL 2020, there are several Caribbean Premier League 2019 stars who may command huge bids in the auction for the premier T20 tournament. CPL offered a fantastic platform for several young players to stamp their presence in the T20 arena. The auction for IPL 2020 (Season 13) will be held in December, 2019 in Kolkata and some of the star performers at the CPL may be drawing sizable bids.

Top 5 CPL players who may get huge amounts in IPL Auction 2020

  1. Glenn Phillips- Phillips is expected to be on the radar for many an IPL franchise ahead of the next edition. The New Zealand wicket-keeper cum batsman lit up the CPL this time around. He even played T20I against South Africa for his country in the year 2017. In the latest CPL season, he was the opening batsman for Jamaica Tallawahs and was the sole player to shine in a season which was otherwise frustrating for the team. Phillips had a 150 strike rate throughout the season, putting up swift starts in many games for his team. He scored 373 runs in 10 innings, becoming the 4th highest run-scorer this year. Phillips was unsold for IPL 2019 although things may change drastically this time around!
  2. Lendl Simmons- Simmons is no stranger to IPL, having already played for Mumbai Indians in the past. This T20 veteran may draw huge bids in the upcoming IPL 2020 auction for his performances in the CPL. In this year’s edition, he debuted for his home franchise as a replacement for Colin Munro. Without his batting, the Knight Riders may not have reached the last-four stage. He scored 430 runs in 11 innings to be the second-highest run-scorer in CPL 2019. Simmons also has the record of the second-highest runs in the entire history of the tournament after compatriot Chris Gayle. With his current form and experience, Simmons may draw huge bids at the auction. In the year 2015, he was the top run scorer for his franchise Mumbai who won their second title in a period of three buyers. The last two seasons saw Simmons going unsold. However, opportunity might just be knocking at the door for him again!
  3. Hayden Walsh- Barbados Tridents chose Walsh in the CPL draft as the second-pick after Sandeep Lamichhane in the spin bowling department. Yet, Walsh tapped into all his opportunities, taking a 5 wicket haul and also becoming a regular fixture in the playing XI. He became the highest wicket-taker for the entire tournament with 22 scalps in just 9 matches. The 27-year old is at his peak and could draw huge interest (and bids) from franchises at the 2020 IPL. Demand will naturally arise on account of Walsh’s current form and his potential to be a tricky customer on spin-friendly Indian pitches.
  4. Brandon King- King was a real star at CPL 2019 for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. He was one of the pillars of the side, powering them to the final for the 5th time (a record) in the history of the tournament. King was the tournament’s top-scorer, notching up a whopping 496 runs in 12 games with a strike rate above 145. He scored a fabulous 132 runs (not out) off only 72 balls against the Barbados Tridents in Qualifier 1 for an easy victory. With his silky-smooth batting and ability to attack the opposition bowlers from the outset, King could be in huge demand at the IPL 2020 auction. He may garner impressive bids from the franchises.
  5. Sheldon Cottrell- Cottrell from Jamaica has already been shaping up well in the international cricket scene and he played a vital role for the West Indies at the recently held ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup at England. He was his team’s highest wicket-taker, snapping up 12 wickets in 9 matches. Cottrell also had a good season in the CPL with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. He picked up 12 wickets in only 8 games and helped his team reach the third position on the table. Cottrell did not find buyers at the IPL auction last year although he is expected to garner massive bids from franchises this time around for sure!
