IPL Auction 2020: Know about Oldest and Youngest Cricketers to Watch Out in the Auction

The IPL Auctions 2020 will be held today in Kolkata in just a few hours from now. It will start at 2.30 pm and will carry on for the next three to four hours. A total of 332 players have been shortlisted for the final round which includes a few young players and a few old players as well. 

Before the IPL 2020 Auctions gets underway let’s have a look at the oldest and the youngest players to go under the hammer in Kolkata. 

Pravin Tambe

Tambe, now 48 is the oldest player to be listed in the IPL auctions 2020. Tambe, who is a father of two made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2013. He was regularly picked by one of the franchises for the next four seasons till 2016. Since the last three seasons, however, Tambe did not find any franchise. His best year in the IPL was 2014 for the Royals when he picked up 15 wickets from 13 matches. Apart from the Royals, he has also played for Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016.

Fawad Ahmed

Fawad Ahmed, the Pakistan-born Australian spinner at 38 is the second oldest cricketer to be listed in the IPL auctions 2020. Despite being a good bowler, Fawad has only played three ODIs and two T20Is for the Australian national team. He is currently plying his trade for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL). He has also played for Sydney Sixers in the past and is one of the most successful bowlers in the league. He is inching closer to 50 wickets in the tournament and has played more than 50 matches. With many of the Indian pitches assisting spin, Fawad will be in the radar of at least a few franchises.

Yusuf Pathan

Yusuf Pathan is one of the most experienced IPL players having played 174 matches in the tournament so far. Aging 37, he is the next oldest player listed in the IPL auctions 2020. Yusuf’s big-hitting prowess earned him a reputation of being a finisher in the tournament. He started his career with Rajasthan Royals and subsequently played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is one of the few players to be a part of three IPL titles. 

Ben Laughlin

AT 37, Ben Laughlin is another oldest player to be auditioning in the IPL 2020 auctions. A skillful bowler, Laughlin was a part of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2018 where he picked up 9 wickets from seven games in the season. Like Fawad, he is also a seasoned bowler in the BBL. Playing for the Adelaide Strikers for 8 straight seasons, Laughlin has picked up 96 wickets in 75 games. He was signed by the Brisbane Heat ahead of the ninth season. Renowned for being a good death bowler, Laughlin will surely attract some attention from the bidders. 

Jeevan Mendis

Sri Lankan spinner Jeevan Mendis aging 37, completes the group of the oldest players to be listed in the IPL 2020 auctions this season. Mendis played for the Delhi Capitals in 2013 and since then have been missing from the tournament. His all-round ability might attract some teams to go for him, however, his continuous absence from the tournament in the past six seasons might see him go unsold.

Meanwhile, there are a few young players as well who will be making some noise in the auctions. 

Noor Ahmad Lakanwal

Lakanwal is an interesting story. He is just 14 years old at the moment and will turn 15 in a few days time. He is the youngest name listed in the IPL 2020 auctions. He is 34 years younger than the oldest player in the tournament Praveen Tambe. Ahmad is left-arm unorthodox bowler, who is an Afghanistan under-19 team regular. He has picked up a nine-wicket haul in the U-19 Asia Cup recently.

Prayas Ray Barman

The Bengal bowler made his IPL debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore last year aging just 16. He is among the listed candidates in the IPL 2020 auctions and now he is just 17 and one of the youngest players in the tournament. He played just one game so far in the tournament and was benched for the rest of the season. It will be interesting to see if he gets any bidders in this auction. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal

The Mumbai U-19 cricketer is just 17 and is touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket. He is included in the India U-19 squad for the next World Cup to be held in South Africa. Jaiswal became the youngest cricketer in the world to score a List A double century. He was one of the top five run-scorers at the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy, with 564 runs in 6 matches at an average of 112.80. For the Indian U-19 team as well, Jaiswal scored 294 runs in 7 matches in a tri-series in England also featuring Bangladesh. 

Priyam Garg

Garg aging 19 has been appointed as the captain of India’s U-19 team who will be aiming to defend their title next year in South Africa. He has already scored a List A century and first-class double century in his career so far, also being part of the India C team that came second in the Deodhar Trophy. In the final match versus India B, Garg scored 74 runs as well. For the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, he was the second-highest run-getter for Uttar Pradesh, notching up 814 runs with an average of 67.83. This tally comprised of two hundreds including his career-best knock of 206 runs.
