Changes in the pipeline?

BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is now striving to implement some changes with regard to the Indian Premier League (IPL) schedule. The upcoming IPL 2020 season may witness a few tweaks related to timings of matches and also the schedule. As per several reports, BCCI is already working on a blueprint for scheduling just one match on a single day in the tournament which could lead to several changes in the future.

Additionally, weekends may have double-header match schedules lined up, going by reports. A lower count of double header matches will naturally mean that fans may witness a longer season next year. The tournament could be extended for a period of 60 days or two months although it is increasingly unlikely at this time. The current window is 45 days. BCCI may look to start night matches at 7 PM since concerns have been voiced by several ex-cricketers including Sunil Gavaskar, the Indian batting legend, who has stated that late finishes are not suitable for the IPL matches. The Governing Council of the IPL has already proposed preponing the play-offs by around 30 minutes in the 2019 season.

There could be plans related to playing more matches at night and hence teams will have to play just one game in the afternoons. Teams playing in northern India usually have to contend with heat waves and sweltering conditions and this decision may be a relief. The Governing Council has not yet issued its approval for a 60 day window instead of 45 days at present. The IPL 2020 may also start from 1st April instead of 12th March as suggested in the tentative schedule given above. It may also conclude on 30th May as per studies. The auctions for the upcoming 2020 IPL are slated for the 19th of December, 2019 in Kolkata. The opening ceremony could be held on a different day as the opening game of IPL 2020 instead of taking place on that very day itself.
