India v Australia: Interesting Stats and Numbers That Matter

The Border-Gavaskar trophy has assumed a lot of significance over the last couple of decades as India and Australia have been involved in some truly epic encounters in the recent past. The 4-match Test series between the two teams hence is being eagerly awaited.

Before the highly anticipated series begins, here is a look at some interesting numbers from the India-Australia Test history.

Highest team total

India’s mammoth 705-7 declared at Sydney in the 4th Test of their 2003-04 is the highest team total in the two team’s history. While the game ended in a draw, Sachin Tendulkar’s majestic unbeaten 241 was the highlight of the match.

Lowest team Total

India’s 58 all out at Brisbane in 1947 remains the lowest team total in the two team’s history. The second lowest team total is also achieved by India on the same tour in the Melbourne Test when they were bowled out for just 67.

Highest Run-Scorer

It is no secret that Sachin Tendulkar absolutely loved playing Australia and it is not a surprise that he is the highest run-scorer in India-Australia Tests. In the 39 Tests that Sachin played against Australia, he scored an outstanding 3630 runs at an average of 55 with 11 hundreds and 15 fifties with a best of 241* at Sydney in 2004.

Highest wicket-taker

With 111 wickets at an average of 30.32, India’s legspinner Anil Kumble holds this precious record. In the 20 Tests that Kumble played against the Aussies, he picked up 10 five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket match hauls with a best of 8-141 at Sydney in 2004.

Highest individual score

Ex-Australian captain Michael Clarke’s terrific unbeaten 329 in 2012 at Sydney is the highest individual score by a batsman in the India-Australia Test history. Clarke overtook the epic 281 by VVS Laxman’s at Kolkata in 2003.

Highest ever partnership

Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke’s colossal 386-run partnership in Adelaide in 2012 is the highest batting partnership for any wicket in India-Australia Tests. While Ponting scored 221, Clarke struck a super 210 in that match. The Australian duo overtook the epic match-turning partnership of 376 runs by India’s VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid in that unforgettable Kolkata Test of 2001.

Most victories as a captain

With 8 victories in 13 Test as a captain between the two teams, ex-Indian Test captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni holds this enviable record. Dhoni had a winning percentage of 61.53 and only lost 4 Tests as a captain against Australia. Although, Dhoni is no longer the national captain, he is likely to hold on to this record for a long time to come as no other captain is even close to him at present.
