Team England Analysis for ICC World Cup 2019

england-cricket-team-analysis

England start the 2019 ICC World Cup as firm favourites and there is a talented and well-balanced squad. The squad for England at this World Cup comprises of Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler (wicket-keeper/vice-captain), Eoin Morgan (captain), Tom Curran, Jonny Bairstow (wicket-keeper), Liam Plunkett, James Vince, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jason Roy, Chris Woakes, Liam Dawson and Mark Wood.

Strengths: England have a solid batting line-up in Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, the captain, Jos Buttler and Jason Roy. The team bats deep and their style of power hitting and fast run accumulation are major plus points while all-rounders like Moeen Ali, Liam Dawson and Ben Stokes add more depth to the side. In Ali and Stokes, England have solid bowling options along with Adil Rashid who can be a handful on his day. The bowling line-up also looks complete with Mark Wood who is a proven performer, Liam Plunkett and Chris Woakes. The team has already covered most areas. Jofra Archer is an exciting prospect by all means.

Weaknesses: England’s team is largely inexperienced on the big stage. Joe Root, Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali and Alex Hales are the only players who played in the 2015 World Cup which went badly for England. Fast-bowling is a worry if they fail to take early wickets. There will be some over-reliance on Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Joe Root.

Opportunities: The England team has the firepower to annihilate opponents if they get the flow going. They have an aggressive batting lineup and their batting has definitely been their mainstay, particularly since they have all-rounders who bat deep into the lower order. England also has a good mix of seamers along with two quality spinners. They should definitely be aiming to win the Cup this year.

Improvement Areas: Playing spin bowling should be a concern that has to be addressed although England’s batsmen have improved on this count. Their batting continues to be a little vulnerable to fast-pitched swing bowling which is another area of improvement. Inexperience may hinder their bowling at the death, particularly if Woakes or Archer have a bad day in the office.
