The opening match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between England and South Africa turned out to be a great match for the people of the host country. Both the teams put up their very best performance but England took the match home, egged on by the home crowd. England won the match by 104 runs. Here is match review:

Team England: Jason Roy, Johny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid

Team South Africa: Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir.

England Innings: England innings started with a jolt. They lost the wicket of Bairstow on the first ball off the bowling of Imran Tahir. Then they gradually consolidated their proceedings. England team scored 50/1 in 8.2 overs with 2nd wicket partnership between J Roy and J Root of 54 off 50 balls. During Power Play England team was 60/1 and the team reached 100/1 at 17.0 overs. J Roy scored his 15th ODI fifty from 51-balls while J Root scored his 31st ODI fifty from 56-balls. The second wicket partnership between J Roy and J Root scored 100 off 103-balls. England touched 150/3 in 26.2 overs. E Morgan continued the run scoring post departure of J Roy and J Root and scored his 46th ODI fifty off 50-balls. England’s score reached 200/3 in 34.5 overs. With a superb display of hitting, Ben Stokes got his 16th ODI fifty in 46-balls. The 4th wicket partnership between Morgan and Ben Stokes fetched 100 runs off 100-balls. England reached 250/5 in 41.5 overs. They accelerated the scoring further and scored 300/7 at 48.4 overs and finally England ended its phenomenal innings at 311 in 50 overs.

South Africa Innings: At the end of the first Power Play, South Africa were able to score 44 for the loss of 2 wickets. They could score 51/2 in 10.5 overs. Van der Dussen was dropped on 6 by Butler in 13.4 overs. At the drinks break, South Africa was at 86/2 in 17.0 overs. De Kock got his 22nd ODI fifty in 58-balls. The 3rd wicket partnership between De Kock and van der Dussen was 56 off 50-balls. The team reached 101/2 in 20.1 overs and then it was 150/5 in 28.0 overs. Van der Dussen scored his 5th ODI fifty off 56-balls. They could score 201/8 in 39.1 overs. Eventually the entire South Africa team finished at 207/10 in 39.5 overs. This was a poor performance from a highly talented team.

The top batsmen for England for the day was Ben Stokes who scored 89 runs of 79-balls. The best batting performance from South Africa team was by Quinton de Kock with 68 of 74-balls.

The top bowler of the day from England was Jofra Archer with 3-27 (from 7-overs) and top bowler from South African team was Lungi Ngidi 3-66 (from 10-overs).

Man of the Match: Ben Stokes for his all round performance, and of course, for the phenomenal catch that sent back Phehlukwayo at 24 runs.
