Messi would struggle at United – Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has lashed out on the Red Devils for how they are operating at the moment. The Old Trafford outfit have only acquired 13 points from 8 games and are currently out of the top six in the Premier League table.

As a result, Paul Scholes has drawn a comparison of the Red Devils to Liverpool and Manchester City from a few years ago as he believes his old club are making the same mistakes as the pair did in the past.

'That shouldn't make any difference but it does,' Scholes said. 'Manchester United now feels like Liverpool from years ago, like we're making all the same mistakes as they did.”

He then went on to state that they used to make fun of the aforementioned two clubs for making so many changes but now he thinks that the roles have been reversed.

'We were watching Liverpool and City from afar and smirking as they changed managers and players every year, never getting anything right. It feels like we have turned into a Liverpool or a Man City.

'I feel like people at Liverpool and Man City are looking at us and laughing like we did at them many years ago.'

Despite spending over £350 million pounds over new players after arriving at the Old Trafford, Mourinho hasn’t been able to form a strong unit. While Scholes doesn’t think that United have less quality, he is of the opinion that even the great Lionel Messi would have struggled to make an impact with the Red Devils.

'I don't think there's a lack of quality there,' said Scholes. 'I do think they miss a couple of real class players that other top teams seem to have — a link player between the midfield and the forwards and also a controlling midfield player.

'It feels like every player who comes into the team struggles. I feel like we could sign Lionel Messi at the moment and he'd struggle in this team.”
